Modern day political campaigns are run in a completely different way to how they were once run, as a result of the internet. People can access the latest political news and events at all times, can interact with their elected representatives, who can now reach more voters than ever before.

The 2008 presidential election in the United States in which Barack Obama beat John McCain saw the internet truly take its place as the new political battleground. President Obama engaged with the electorate through news sites, forums, podcasts, and social media. Furthermore, the internet saw a major shift in the way that political campaigns are funded. President Obama was able to raise over six hundred million dollars from more than three million online donors, and this went some way to enabling his landslide victory.

The internet has also seen a major change in the way that political news is reported and dissected, with a number of political websites being developed and growing in popularity, such as The Huffington Post in America, which started out as fringe journalism, but are now read by millions of people all over the world and have forced the more mainstream media outlets to enter the online arena too. Mainstream news broadcasters like Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN in America, and Sky TV and the BBC in the United Kingdom, now fully accept that an online presence is a critical component of any significant news outlet. They are also to be found participating in social media, with Twitter and Facebook being viewed as genuine news outlets.
